Queenstown to Milford Sound
Getting from Queenstown to Milford Sound is a long day no matter how you slice it. The road runs 288 km through Te Anau and takes almost four hours each way, so a day trip means a 12 to 13 hour coach day, an early start behind your own wheel, or a 4.5 to 5 hour fly-cruise that trades road time for air fare. This guide compares the three ways side by side, explains why there is no direct road, and covers the drive yourself: fuel, chains, the Homer Tunnel and parking at the terminal. For a stop by stop breakdown of the highway itself, see the Milford Road guide. The bookable tours are compared on Milford Sound boat tours compared.

Quick answer The short answer
Queenstown to Milford Sound is 288 km by road and takes almost four hours each way through Te Anau, so a day trip runs 12 to 13 hours by coach or car. The fastest option is a fly-cruise day of about 4.5 to 5 hours with flights both ways. There is no direct road and no shortcut. The most booked way is a coach and cruise day trip from about $148 per person.
Key takeaways
- Short on time? The Flight and Cruise from Queenstown cuts the day to 4.5 hours with a guaranteed window seat for $512.29 per person.
- On a budget? The Coach and Cruise from Queenstown is a 12-hour day with central pickup at $148 per person.
- Want the road at your own pace? See the drive guide below and the stop by stop detail in the Milford Road section.

Three Ways to Do It in a Day
Every Queenstown to Milford Sound day trip uses one of three transport modes: your own car, a coach or small group van, or a light aircraft. The prices below are the bookable card prices from this site's listings, in US dollars per person.
The Ways Compared
Driving yourself costs fuel and parking plus a separate cruise ticket, and no total is given here because those costs vary. Coach and cruise day trips bundle transport and the cruise into one per person price. Small group tours do the same in vans of up to 15 with lunch included. Fly-cruise trips fly both ways and shrink the day to 4.5 to 5 hours, at a much higher price than the coach. All figures come from the tour listings on this site.
One honest note on time at the fiord: cruise lengths range from about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours across these listings, so no option buys you much more than two hours on the water. What changes is the journey, not the destination.
| Way | Price | Day | Time at Milford | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drive yourself | Fuel, parking and cruise paid separately, no total stated | 12-14 hours with stops | As long as your cruise plus the stops you choose | Confident drivers who want control of the stops |
| Coach and Cruise from Queenstown | $148 | 12 hours | Cruise length not stated on the listing | First timers who want the cheapest hands-off day |
| Glass-Roof Coach and Cruise | $161 | 12.5 hours | 1 hour 45 minute cruise | Photo stops at Mirror Lakes and Monkey Creek from a glass-roof coach |
| Small Group Tour from Queenstown | $211.21 | 13 hours | Boutique cruise, length not stated | Travelers who want a van of up to 15 and lunch included |
| Premium Small Group Day Tour | $239.83 | 13 hours | 1 hour 45 minutes | A packed picnic lunch and WiFi in a Mercedes van |
| Flight and Cruise from Queenstown | $512.29 | 4.5 hours | 1 hour 45 minutes | Window seats guaranteed on both flights |
| Fly-Cruise-Fly from Queenstown | $467 | 5 hours | 2 hours | Hotel transfers from 24 listed Queenstown hotels |
| Flight and Cruise Day Trip | $485.96 | 4.5 hours | Length not stated on the listing | A pilot who flies through the fiord to land |
How to Choose
Money first: the coach and cruise options start at $148 per person and the small group tours sit at $211.21 and $239.83. The fly-cruise trips run $467 to $512.29. That gap shrinks the day from 12 to 13 hours to 4.5 to 5 hours, since Queenstown Airport lists the flight at 30 to 40 minutes one way against almost four hours of driving.
Comfort second: the small group vans cap at 15 passengers and include lunch, which the coaches do not. The Coach and Cruise from Queenstown sells snacks and cakes from its cafe but lunch is not included, so pack food. The Premium Small Group Day Tour and Small Group Tour from Queenstown both include a picnic lunch.
If a whole day on the road sounds like too much, splitting the trip with a night in Te Anau changes the maths. From Te Anau, the sound is about 120 km away, and the Full-Day Tour from Te Anau runs 9.5 hours and the Cruise and Walks from Te Anau runs 9 hours, both priced under $190. A night in the fiord itself is possible too: the Milford Sound Overnight Cruise sleeps you on the water for $391 per person, transport from Queenstown not included.
Driving Queenstown to Milford Sound
The self-drive is the most flexible way to see the Milford Road and the most demanding day. Here is what the official road sources say you need to know before you take the wheel.
The Route and the Numbers
There is one road and it runs through Te Anau. From Queenstown you drive south on SH6 through Kingston, west on SH97 to Mossburn, then SH94 to Te Anau and on to Milford Sound. Queenstown to Te Anau is 170 km and allows about 2 hours of driving. Te Anau to Milford Sound is about 120 km and takes at least 2 hours 15 minutes without stops, per DOC, with Fiordland tourism quoting a minimum of 2.5 hours. The full Queenstown to Milford Sound leg is 288 km and takes almost four hours on narrow winding roads, and some sources suggest allowing up to 5 hours. RealNZ puts the whole day, cruise and stops included, at 12 to 14 hours.
Why no direct road? The Hollyford Valley has only one road, the Milford Road itself. A 2010 Haast-Hollyford link road proposal was rejected, so the Te Anau detour is the only route. The road is fully sealed but narrow and winding in places, and its injury crash rate runs about 65% higher than the rest of New Zealand's network. It closes an average of 8 days a year, mainly in winter. The stop by stop detail of that highway, from Mirror Lakes to The Chasm, lives in the Milford Road guide.
Fuel, Chains and Coverage
Te Anau is your last reliable petrol stop and the last town with food and accommodation, about 120 km before the sound. There are no fuel stops between Te Anau and Milford Sound on the 240 km return trip, and emergency fuel at Milford works only with select credit cards.
Between May and November, all vehicles on the Milford Road must carry or fit snow chains when required. Milford Lodge frames the chain season as June through November, conditional on road status. Chains can be hired at any Te Anau petrol station, and no 4WD is needed on SH94. Marian Corner avalanche gates close whenever there is avalanche danger, and in winter the road stays shut until explosives clear the snow.
There is no mobile phone coverage along the Milford Road. Emergency phones sit at Knobs Flat and at the Homer Tunnel. Check conditions before you leave on 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 444 449). Public toilets on the road are at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford Sound, and Knobs Flat has the last flush toilets before the sound.
The Homer Tunnel
The Homer Tunnel is the gateway through the Darran Mountains, 99 km from Te Anau at 945 m above sea level. DOC's brochure puts it at 1.2 km long, though fiordland.org.nz quotes 1.3 km. It is unlined granite, slopes about 1:10 down to the Cleddau side, and was completed in 1953 after work began in 1935.
The practical fact for your day trip is the traffic lights, which were reintroduced in 2004. Fiordland tourism says they control flow over peak summer periods and can cause delays of up to 20 minutes. RealNZ describes typical waits of 20 to 30 minutes in peak season. Build that into your cruise arrival time.
Parking and Timing at the Terminal
Allow 45 minutes to park and reach the cruise terminal, and check in 20 minutes before departure. The cruise departure point is a 10-minute walk from the car park via a covered walkway.
Parking at Milford Sound costs NZD$10 per hour before 3pm, NZD$5 per hour after 3pm, and NZD$30 overnight. Southern Discoveries lists the main car park at $20 for five hours, so the two published rates do not fully agree. A free parking option exists by a 20-minute foreshore walk from the boat terminal, and Deepwater Basin has limited free parking with a free shuttle bus every 15 to 20 minutes for the 2 km to the marina.
Leave Queenstown early. Southern Discoveries suggests leaving Te Anau by 8am to enjoy the stops, and from Queenstown the 170 km run south to Te Anau comes first. Plan the return too: in summer it does not get dark until after 9:00pm, which gives you daylight for the drive home. Check winter daylight hours for your travel dates before booking a cruise that finishes late. For the full stop by stop plan along the highway, see the Milford Road guide, and for cruise choices at the end of the drive, browse every Milford Sound boat tour on the homepage.
Coach or Small-Group Day Tour
A coach day takes the wheel out of your hands and covers the 288 km each way with a cruise in the middle. The choice inside this option is simple: a large coach or a 15-seat van.
The Big Coaches
Two large-coach listings run from Queenstown. Coach and Cruise from Queenstown by Pure Milford is a 12-hour day at $148 per person with hotel pickup in central Queenstown, scenic photo stops and a cruise with three viewing decks. It is the most reviewed option on the site at 4,203 reviews with a 4.7 rating. Lunch is not included. Snacks, cakes and drinks can be bought from the on-board cafe and bar.
The Glass-Roof Coach and Cruise by GreatSights is a 12.5-hour day at $161 per person. It runs a glass-roof luxury coach with commentary in five languages, photo stops named in the listing at Mirror Lakes and Monkey Creek, and a 1 hour 45 minute catamaran cruise. Lunch is optional and costs extra if you pre-book a picnic or hot buffet. There is no hotel pickup. You meet at the InterCity Bus Stop in Queenstown.
RealNZ puts coach time one way at about 5 hours, and InterCity lists 295 km and about 5 hours 30 minutes for the road leg. The rest of the long day goes to the cruise, the stops and the terminal.
The 15-Seat Vans
Two small-group tours cap the van at 15 guests. Small Group Tour from Queenstown by Cheeky Kiwi Travel runs 13 hours at $211.21 per person in a Mercedes Sprinter with hotel pickup at select Queenstown locations. A picnic lunch is included, though not for infants aged 0 to 3, and you tell the operator your dietary needs at booking. It carries a 4.9 rating from 3,727 reviews.
Premium Small Group Day Tour by Altitude Tours is also 13 hours for up to 15, at $239.83 per person. The cruise runs 1 hour 45 minutes, or 2 hours on the 7.30am departure. A packed picnic lunch is included, with a vegetarian option if you ask by 5pm the day before, and the Mercedes van has WiFi. Pickup is from select accommodations, not Airbnbs or private addresses unless agreed.
The trade is price against intimacy. The vans cost more than the big coaches and buy you fewer passengers and an included lunch.
Coach Comparison
The table lines up the Queenstown road tours on the figures their listings give. Prices are per person in US dollars from the tour cards.
What the Cruise Is
All the tours end on the same water. Cruise lengths stated in the listings run from an unstated length on Coach and Cruise from Queenstown to 1 hour 45 minutes on Premium Small Group Day Tour and Glass-Roof Coach and Cruise, with 2 hours on the 7.30am Altitude departure. On the Coach and Cruise from Queenstown the boat goes close to Stirling Falls.
For how the boats themselves differ, compare the full range of Milford Sound boat tours on the homepage. Every one of these tours needs a day. None of them picks you up outside Queenstown or Te Anau except where the listing says so, and none includes the cruise lunch unless the listing states it.
How the Listings Compare
Each row below comes from the operator's own listing, and anything the listing does not state is marked that way.
| Tour | Price | Day Length | Lunch | Pickup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coach and Cruise from Queenstown | $148 | 12 hours | Not included, cafe on board | Hotel, central Queenstown |
| Glass-Roof Coach and Cruise | $161 | 12.5 hours | Optional, extra cost | No, bus stop meeting |
| Small Group Tour from Queenstown | $211.21 | 13 hours | Picnic lunch included | Hotel, select locations |
| Premium Small Group Day Tour | $239.83 | 13 hours | Packed picnic included | Hotel, select accommodations |
Figures come from the tour listings on this site. Prices and inclusions can change, so check the tour card before you book.

Flying In Instead
A fly-cruise-fly swaps most of the road for a 30 to 40 minute flight each way and cuts the day to around 4.5 to 5 hours.
How the Day Works
Queenstown Airport says the flight to Milford Sound typically takes 30 to 40 minutes one way, and the airport lists ten flight operators for the route including Air Milford, Glenorchy Air and True South Flights. You fly over Fiordland, land at Milford Sound Airport, a 782 m asphalt runway at 3 m above sea level at the head of the fiord, then join a cruise and fly back.
Flight and Cruise from Queenstown by True South Flights runs 4.5 hours at $512.29 per person for up to 13 guests, with a guaranteed window seat on both flights and a 1 hour 45 minute cruise. You check in 30 minutes before departure at the Remarkables Park Town Centre office and park near the New World supermarket. Meals are available for purchase, lunch is not included.
Fly-Cruise-Fly from Queenstown by Milford Sound Scenic Flights runs 5 hours at $467 per person with a 2-hour cruise, guaranteed window seats and hotel transfers from 24 listed hotels. No food is available on the cruise, so bring a small bag with food and drink. The operator checks the weather 1.5 hours before departure.
Flight and Cruise Day Trip by Glenorchy Air is 4.5 hours at $485.96 per person for up to 30 passengers. You meet at the Glenorchy Air desk inside the Queenstown Airport main terminal, check in 30 minutes before, and the pilot flies through the fiord to land. Glenorchy Air has been based at Queenstown Airport since 1992 and promises a window seat for every passenger.
Weather Cancellations
Flights depend on conditions, and Milford Sound averages 92.8% relative humidity with rain on more than 180 days a year, so plan for the possibility of a change. RealNZ says when a flight is cancelled the guest returns by coach and the flight component is refunded. Glenorchy Air makes the same promise on its own site: if conditions are unsafe, passengers return to Queenstown by coach.
That turns a 4.5-hour day into a road day, so keep the morning open. For a deeper comparison of aircraft, routes and operators, see the Milford Sound scenic flight guide.
Is It Worth the Price
The fly-cruise listings run from $467 to $512.29 per person, against $148 to $239.83 on the road tours. You pay considerably more for a much shorter day and the flight views. If the weather cancels the flying, RealNZ and Glenorchy Air say passengers return by coach, so check your operator's terms.
Staying a Night in Te Anau
Splitting the trip with a night in Te Anau removes about 170 km of driving from your day and turns a 12 to 13 hour marathon into a 9 to 9.5 hour outing.
Why Te Anau Works as a Base
Te Anau sits 171 km southwest of Queenstown, about 2 hours by road, and Milford Sound is 120 km further north. RealNZ calls it the last town with petrol, food and accommodation before the fiord. It is a small town of about 2,920 people with over 4,000 beds in summer, on the shore of the largest lake in the South Island.
Mean daily maximums run from 20.0°C in January to 8.4°C in July with 1,202.5 mm of annual rain. Because the Milford Road leg alone needs at least 2 hours 15 minutes without stops, starting from Te Anau lets you leave later and stop more.
The Te Anau Tours
Full-Day Tour from Te Anau by Fiordland Tours is a 9.5-hour day for up to 16 at $180.30 per person, rated 5.0 from 1,316 reviews. It starts from 60 Town Centre in Te Anau or your hotel, includes morning tea, a 1 hour 45 minute cruise and scenic stops, and offers a helicopter flyback as an optional upgrade. A packed picnic lunch is listed as an option with choices including chicken and lamb sandwiches, and the listing does not say whether it costs extra.
Cruise and Walks from Te Anau by Trips & Tramps is a 9-hour day at $187.33 per person, also rated 5.0 from 789 reviews. It is the only tour on the site built around walks, with guided and self-guided nature walks, a small-vessel cruise and a picnic lunch included. Vegetarian and gluten-free are available with advance notice. Group size is listed as up to 15 in the description and 10 in the booking data.
Both tours cost more per person than the Queenstown coaches but you save a night of driving and gain a shorter day. To stay longer, the Milford Sound Overnight Cruise sleeps you on the water.
Do and Don't
Do
- Do fill the tank in Te Anau, because there are no fuel stops on the 120 km to Milford Sound and emergency fuel there only works with select credit cards.
- Do carry snow chains from May to November, because all vehicles on the Milford Road must carry or fit them when required and you can hire them at any Te Anau petrol station.
- Do pack insect repellent and warm waterproof layers, because sandflies are present on the Milford Road and at the sound and the cruise decks need a windproof jacket.
- Do book small-group tours early in peak season, because the vans cap at 15 guests.
- Do build the tunnel wait into your drive plan, because Homer Tunnel traffic lights can add up to 20 minutes in peak summer and 30 minutes is typical in peak season per RealNZ.
Don't
- Don't plan phone calls on the road, because there is no mobile coverage along the Milford Road and emergency phones sit only at Knobs Flat and the Homer Tunnel.
- Don't rely on a same-day turnaround if the weather closes in, because the road closes an average of 8 days a year, mainly in winter, and avalanche gates at Marian Corner shut whenever there is avalanche danger.
- Don't count on food being included, because the Pure Milford coach, the GreatSights coach and all three fly-cruise tours list lunch as not included.
- Don't bring a dog, because dogs are not permitted in Fiordland National Park.
